私はここ最近、エボラ流行に関する動きや、各国の保健当局がどのように封じ込めを進めているのかをずっと注視しています。状況は非常に不安を感じさせるものであり、自分の考えを書き残さずにはいられませんでした。

現在、世界は再びエボラ流行の拡大を見守っています。今回確認されているのは、コンゴ民主共和国(DRC)とウガンダで広がっている、比較的珍しい「ブンディブギョ型エボラウイルス」です。

WHO(世界保健機関)の報告によると、この流行は2026年5月初旬、コンゴ民主共和国イトゥリ州で発生した原因不明の死亡例の集団発生によって最初に確認されました。その中には医療従事者の感染例も含まれていました。

その後の検査によって、ブンディブギョ型エボラウイルス感染症であることが判明しました。この型に対しては、現在も正式に承認されたワクチンが存在しておらず、それが今回の流行をさらに深刻なものにしています。

その後も感染疑い例と確認症例は増え続けており、各国の保健当局は接触者追跡、隔離措置、緊急対応などを急いで進めています。しかし、社会不安や医療インフラ不足、限られた医療資源を抱える地域での感染拡大は、決して簡単に封じ込められるものではありません。

そして私は、ある恐ろしい疑問を感じています。

私たちは本当に、次の致命的な感染症に備えられているのでしょうか。

医療現場の内部を見たことがない人は、医療システムがどれほど脆いかを実感していないと思います。COVID パンデミックは、その現実を世界中に突きつけました。病院の逼迫、医療物資不足、心身ともに疲弊する医療従事者。現代医療とテクノロジーがあっても、世界全体が混乱に陥りました。

エボラは COVID とは異なります。

COVID は空気感染しやすく、無症状でも感染を広げるため、急速に世界中へ拡大しました。一方エボラは、主に体液接触によって感染するため、一般社会での感染力は COVID ほど高くありません。

しかし、エボラには別の恐ろしさがあります。

致死率が非常に高く、症状も重篤で衝撃的です。もし封じ込めに失敗すれば、地域の医療システムは短期間で崩壊しかねません。

私が本当に不安を感じているのは、そこです。

多くの人は COVID のロックダウンと比較しますが、もしエボラが制御不能になれば、社会的恐怖はさらに大きくなる可能性があります。より厳しい国境管理、大規模隔離、防護服に包まれた医療従事者、病棟閉鎖、そして強いプレッシャーの中で対応を迫られる政府。

そして最大の問題は、

世界の医療システムは、本当に再び耐えられるのかということです。

確かに COVID から学んだ国もあります。緊急対応能力の強化、監視体制の改善、病院の危機管理経験など、以前より進歩した部分もあります。

しかしその一方で、多くの医療システムはいまだ疲弊しています。医療従事者不足は続き、燃え尽き症候群も完全には解消されていません。さらに、政府や保健機関への信頼も低下しています。

医療通訳に関わる立場として、この問題は特別な重みを感じます。

多くの医療通訳者は、COVID 時代を今でも鮮明に覚えています。終わりの見えない緊急通話、不安を抱えた患者、電話越しに泣く家族、ICU の説明、死亡通知、混乱、恐怖、そして人生で最も苦しい瞬間に立ちはだかる言葉の壁。

医療通訳者は、あの時代の“見えない最前線”でした。

もし再び世界的な感染拡大が起きれば、医療通訳者はまた、医療システムと弱い立場の人々をつなぐ重要な存在になるでしょう。

私は本当に、そこまで悪化しないことを願っています。

現時点で、エボラは世界的パンデミックではありません。感染はまだ特定地域に集中しており、専門家も「迅速で強力な公衆衛生対策が取られれば、エボラは空気感染型ウイルスより封じ込めやすい」と説明しています。

だからこそ、過度なパニックは必要ありません。

しかし同時に、油断も許されません。

COVID が教えたのは、このつながった世界では、感染症は決して“他人事”では終わらないということです。

本当の試練とは、崩壊した後に人類が対応できるかではありません。

崩壊する前に、私たちが行動できるかどうかです。
