I’ve always been intrigued by Leonardo da Vinci and have been a follower of his story, but the reason I was inspired to write a piece about how I feel about him is because of a fellow da Vincian I had the privilege to meet. Hearing their passion and perspective on Leonardo’s work reignited my  admiration for this legendary figure and gave me the nudge to put my thoughts into words.

It’s hard to pinpoint the moment I became captivated by Leonardo da Vinci. Maybe it was the first time I stared at an image of the Mona Lisa, trying to unravel her enigmatic smile. Or perhaps it was learning how his mind effortlessly bridged art, science, and invention; a feat that feels almost superhuman. Whatever the moment was, one thing is certain: Leonardo da Vinci represents a fascinating blend of genius and mystery that continues to enthrall me, and the world, even centuries later.

The Mystery of the Mona Lisa

The Mona Lisa is more than a painting, it’s a riddle dressed in oil paint. Who was she? Why does her smile change depending on how you look at her? Why did da Vinci keep the painting with him for years, even as he traveled across Europe? These questions pull us into her orbit; as if the answers might reveal not just her secrets but also something about ourselves.

To me, her gaze feels almost alive, as if she knows something about the world, or maybe about me, that I don’t. It’s this subtle, almost eerie quality that makes her so timeless. She’s not just a portrait, she’s a portal into Leonardo’s brilliant and deeply curious mind. Was he trying to capture a fleeting moment of emotion? Or was he testing the limits of perception itself? The ambiguity is what keeps us coming back.

The Drama of The Last Supper

And then there’s The Last Supper. It’s not just a depiction of a religious moment, it’s a masterpiece of storytelling. The way Leonardo captured the raw, human emotion of the disciples reacting to Jesus’ announcement of betrayal feels cinematic, almost modern. Each figure is alive with expression, movement, and tension, making you feel like you’re sitting at the table with them.

But beyond the artistry, I’m drawn to the layers of mystery in this work too. Over the years, people have found hidden symbols, proportions, and even alleged codes in the painting. While some of these theories veer into the absurd, they all speak to Leonardo’s ability to pack a single moment with boundless intrigue. Was he deliberately embedding puzzles, or was his genius simply too vast to fit into one interpretation?

The Genius of Leonardo

What makes Leonardo so extraordinary is the sheer breadth of his curiosity. He wasn’t just a painter, he was an anatomist, an engineer, a scientist, and even a bit of a philosopher. He sketched flying machines centuries before airplanes became a reality; he dissected human cadavers to understand the body’s mechanics, blending science and art in ways that still astound modern experts. His notebooks, filled with mirrored handwriting and fantastical inventions, read like the musings of someone who truly saw the world differently.

What I admire most about Leonardo is his insatiable curiosity. He didn’t just accept the world as it was, he wanted to know why and how. He studied everything, from the flow of water to the mechanics of a bird’s wing, and turned those observations into art and innovation. That kind of relentless pursuit of knowledge feels rare, even today.

Why We’re Still Obsessed

I think the world remains enamored with Leonardo da Vinci because he represents the limitless potential of human creativity. He reminds us that art and science don’t have to be separate; they can inspire and elevate one another. His works feel like whispers from the past, urging us to keep questioning, keep exploring, and never stop being curious.

But there’s also something deeply mysterious about Leonardo himself. Despite all we know about him, so much remains elusive. What drove him? Did he realize how far ahead of his time he was? How did he see the world so differently? These unanswered questions make him feel almost mythical, a puzzle that will never be fully solved.

My Personal Connection

For me, Leonardo da Vinci is a constant source of inspiration. Whenever I feel stuck creatively, I think of his boundless curiosity and remind myself to look at the world with fresh eyes. His work challenges me to embrace mystery, to find beauty in science, and to seek meaning in the smallest details.

And maybe that’s why we’ll never tire of him. Leonardo da Vinci didn’t just create art, he created worlds of possibility. He left behind not just masterpieces but also questions, inviting us to keep exploring the intersection of art, science, and imagination. And for that, he’ll always have my admiration.
